Introduction
Krabi, with its 160 kilometre, West facing coastline and 130 Islands in the Phang-nga Bay, Southern Thailand, is attracting a growing number of visitors, destined for the beaches. Krabi has everything for the tourist, with fine white sand beaches, clear warm shallow waters and a year round tropical climate, making the ideal holiday environment for families needing a relaxing holiday. For the more adventurous, boating, a myriad of water sports, climbing or trekking, cultural activities and sightseeing, offers tremendous excitement for those who take part. Its a great place for the tourist, mixing comforts and pleasures of western society, in a beautiful and incredible, oriental setting.
North Krabi
The Northern coastline of Krabi district, towards the top of the Phang-nga Bay, is the least developed. This area has stunning natural scenery with beautiful beaches and progressively becomes for developed as we move South and East, through Ao Nang to Krabi Town. The areas that we recommend you to review in this area, are shown below, for guidance.

Krabi Center
Krabi Town is situated on the Krabi river mouth which flows for five kilometres through the town, into the Andaman Sea at Tambon Pak Nam. Many surrounding mountain ranges also move fresh water from the hills and drain into the river basin at Krabi. Like many other areas of Thailand, the economy of Krabi, was formerly based on fishing and agriculture. The sandy clay soil is suitable for a massive variety of wild tropical plants and flowers. Rubber trees were one of its first industries. Palms, Coconuts, Mangos and Coffee, grow in abundance for the local population.
Krabi Town is the administrative capital of Krabi Province and one of its eight districts. The remaining seven districts, situated on the Thailands South West Coast and 130 Islands in the Andaman Sea are Khao Panom, Khlong Thom, Plai Phraya, Ko Lanta, Ao Luk, Lam Thap and, Nhua Khlong. Krabi Province population has increased in recent years to around 400,000 people, due to the surge in expatriates living and working in the area. The new opportunities created by property developers constructing new holiday resorts, has resulted in many new jobs for the local inhabitants and for Thai people from other areas. Krabi Islands
As a Sailor myself, I like Islands. In the geographically protected Phang-nga Bay area, the Krabi districts 130 Islands, large and small, some developed but many uninhabited, offer tremendous choice for exploring on land and in the water, these stunning rocky outcrops. Obviously boating, both under Power and Sail, is a major sport in the area. The increasing number of Marinas, now in operation and under construction, ensures that this will continue in the future.
Our area guides below, give an outline of two of the most interesting and famous Islands, in the area covered by this region.
Lanta Islands
Phi Phi Islands
Krabi South
In the Southern coastal area of Krabi Province, the district of Trang continues with natural lush tropical scenery and pristine unspoilt beaches. The geographical area is large, but has the additional advantage of being close to Songkhla Lake and Thailand's East Coast beaches.
Our area guide provides additional information about this stunning area.
